Low Level Laser Therapy

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is one of the most promising new developments in rehabilitation.  While the mechanism of action is not fully understood, both clinicians and clients are noting amazing results with this exciting new technology.

What is a Laser?

Laser is an acronym standing for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.  Lasers are beams of light that do not diverge (ie. spread out from their source, like a flashlight beam does), and exist only of one color (unlike “white light” which is made up of several colors.

What is Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)?

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) is a systematic application of a low-powered pulsed laser intended to aid in recovery from injury and/ or to enhance musculoskeletal performance.

While the precise mechanism that makes Low Level Laser Therapy so successful is unknown, we do know that certain lasers (like the low powered 635 nm laser at Integrative Therapeutics) have a measurable effect on living cells.  Many clinical studies demonstrate that LLLT can:

            -stimulate healing

            -decrease pain

            -improve muscle function

            -decrease inflammation

At Integrative Therapeutics, we have successfully used LLLT to treat a number of conditions, including:

            -lower back pain

            -neck pain

            -shoulder pain and impingement syndrome

            -joint sprains and strains

            -bursitis

            -tendonitis

The benefits of LLLT are not limited to clients with injuries, however.  We have also used the effects of LLLT to assist athletes in improving their strength, range of motion, and coordination in order to enhance their overall performance.

How long does it take?

Given the wide range of clients we treat, the number of laser sessions per client can range from 1 to more than 10.  Usually, clients see marked improvements after just one session, and most have improved to the point where they no longer need the laser after 6 sessions.

The laser is generally applied within a normal physical therapy session.  The laser component of treatment typically takes about 10 minutes.

Is it safe?

Absolutely.  LLLT is FDA approved, and there have been no reported cases of negative side effects.  Integrative Therapeutics does restrict the application of LLLT in certain cases, however.  Because the effect of LLLT application on malignant tissue and on the developing fetus has not been studied adequately in our view, we will not perform LLLT in individuals known to have active cancer in the treatment region, or on any woman who is pregnant.

How much does it cost?

“Laser adjunct treatments cost $30.  This cost is in addition to the typical treatment costs associated with a physical therapy visit.

Does my health insurance cover LLLT?

Unfortunately, no.  While LLLT is FDA approved, health insurance companies do not cover this treatment currently.

Where can I learn more about LLLT?
We have found www.erchonia.com to be an excellent resource.  Erchonia is the company that manufactures the laser unit we use at Integrative Therapeutics.
